Functional Movements and a dirty secert

The idea behind crossfit is functional movements.    I was reading an article yesterday in Men's Health about the US Air Force combat controllers.  They were talking to one SSgt how was in a fire fight and had to run about a mile to safety with a bullet in his lungs.  To add insult to injury he also had to call in an air strike and his own med evac.  This is the best definition of functional fitness that I can think of.  So today I had my own little run in with functional fitness although it was not anything that was life or death but it was pretty cool idea of how being fit can help you be better than you are.
Today's work out was a ten mile run at just under a nine mile pace( not to quick but quick enough).  I got done with my run and was heading off base to go pick up a couple of things.  As I was driving I noticed two SP's standing next to a car with its hazards on.   The two Airman were getting ready to push the car out into the parking lot across the road.  As usually in this wonderful state of Utah no one was going to stop and help out.  So I ran over to them and offered my assistance.  Of course they refused but of course I refused to be refused.  So it was only about 600 meters to the parking lot but I was able to help them out.  Normally two years ago if I had just ran ten miles the idea of pushing a car would have been out of the question.  It felt really good to be able to help them out.
As I was running today I got to thinking, which is my normal long run thing to do.  Two years ago I was so out of shape I could barely run a mile and a half.  In fact I was happy to get it done in under 14 minutes.  Now I am trying to get it below nine minutes.  The big dirt secret I figured out about myself is that I lack a lot of will power.   When I started doing Crossfit I found out that I had pretty good strength but no endurance what so ever.   This is something that I still struggle with I can run 13 miles at a good pace but getting past that is killing me.  The same goes for any movement overhead.  I have known this is my problem for sometime yet I stay in my comfort zone and do not push passed what is known.  I guess my goal for the next couple of months is to venture into the unknown and see what happens.
